Finding the source and stopping it can be quite difficult since it does not appear on the surface. Here, we have listed multiple methods with easy-to-follow steps to stop random background music playing on your computer in this article.

How to Fix the Computer Playing Music When Nothing is Open?

Restarting your computer generally stops the random music that is playing without anything open. It closes the program culprit for the music. But you can also apply the method mentioned below to fix the issues without restarting your system.

Close All Web Browsers

Initially, you need to make sure that all the web tabs on your web browser are closed. Then, check the taskbar to see if you have a separate web browser open with the music playing. Also, check and close all the incognito tabs or private tabs that may be open.  Just to be sure, disconnect your computer from the internet to see if the music stops playing. If not, it’s coming from a background program or malware.

Close Background Programs

Once you check your web browser, you need to check to see if any other programs or applications are creating the sound. Initially, check the taskbar to see if any app is open.  Even if there’s nothing open on your computer, there may be apps running in the background. You can also open the Task Manager if your taskbar is empty. You can follow the steps mentioned below to do so. On Windows On Mac If you have video games running in the background, close them as well. Close any background task that is music or gaming related.

Disconnect Speakers Picking Radio Signal

Some computer speakers can pick up radio signals from a nearby antenna or transmitter. This can cause your speaker to play a sound that is not open on your computer.  You can check if it’s the case by unplugging the speakers from your computer. But leave the power line for the speaker in the socket. If it’s the cause, leave the speaker shut down for a while and reconnect to the computer.  You can see if external or inbuilt speakers are producing the sound from the system’s sound settings. Follow the method mentioned below to do so. Once you locate the speaker playing the sound, you can temporarily disable it to stop the music.

Remove CD From Your Computer

If you have a CD in your CD player, remove it from your computer and check to see if the music stops playing. If you have an external CD or DVD player, unplug it from your computer. If the faulty CD is the cause, try not to use it in the future.

Disable Startup Programs

Even if you have no programs open, some applications on your computer may run in the background since the computer’s startup. You can follow the method mentioned below to disable the program’s automatic startup.

Run Audio Troubleshooter

Windows has a troubleshooting option for system issues that includes an audio playback. If the source of the sound is not related to web browsers, or external software or programs, the troubleshooting can fix the audio. So, follow the steps mentioned below.

Run Antivirus Scan

The methods mentioned above can temporarily stop the problem or permanently fix the issue. If they do not work, then your computer probably has a virus or malware that causes the music to play in the background (especially advertisements). You can use antivirus or anti-malware software to fix the random music playing in the background. The steps to run a malware scan differ depending on your preferred software. But generally, there is a Run Scan option that you can use. Then, follow the antivirus instructions to eliminate such malware if they’re detected.
